Michael Moore’s movie “Capitalism – A Love Story”
September 21, 2009 in News by Diego Rodrigues
THIS WEDNESDAY -ALL NEW YORKER ZEITGEISTERS: Movie “Capitalism – A Love Story” opens early in 2 Manhattan Theatres. Let’s see it together and talk afterwards over coffee about how this movie can hurt us and how it can help us in seeking a Resource Based Economy. And let’s see it this first day 9/23 so we can get a jump on it and all the coverage it’s getting on the internet and on tv about which people can respond on internet to readers comments, etc. and/or make decisions on how they’d like to disseminate RBE info at future showings, not to mention a fun way to meet fellow New Yorkers interested in same. The 2 theaters, one in Midtown (Lincoln Plaza Cinemas – Broadway Bet 62nd & 63rd Streets with best show times for those who work of 6:40, 7:25 in evening) and Downtown – (Angelika Film Center – Corner of Houston & Mercer Streets, 7:00, 8:00 and other times). My preference ’cause it’s easier to get to from work and to get home to for me after is the Midtown location but if others prefer downtown, I’m still in. (And I’ll bring copies of the dvd “Global Warming Swindle” with me for anyone who wants ‘em.)
I propose the Midtown location (by Subway 1, 2, A, B, C, and D trains to 59th Street- Columbus Circle stop) for the 6:40 p.m. show. Calling all members of this site – Are you in or do you want a location/time change? Where should we meet and how will we know each other? It might be very crowded and hectic on first night’s showing so we should perhaps plan to meet several blocks away.

Are any/all of you able to attend Moore’s movie opening this Wednesday?? (See “latest post” in upper left hand corner of this website’s home page.) **Diego – have you emailed all 56 members of this site about the suggested meeting – to get together to watch the 6:40 p.m. Wednesday movie opening in Midtown to talk about movie over coffee with fellow Zeitgeisters afterwards? (If you have members regular email addresses also that would be an even better way to notify them in case some members don’t come to this site until AFTER Wednesday. The phone number for the Midtown theatre is 212-757-2280 and they’re selling tickets over the phone ($12 for adults, $8.50 for seniors). I called and asked manager if she expected Wednesday’s showings to sell out, and she didn’t think so but recommended to be on the safe side by purchasing them at the Theatre in advance or over the phone via credit card. I want to make sure I get into a showing on Wednesday and will get a ticket for myself in advance for the 6:40 p.m. show unless people respond that a different time is better for them. So, who can come & when? I’ve posted this message to the “media” group because Moore’s movie is all over the media – front page of yesterday’s New York Times Arts & Leisure section, he’ll be a guest on Bill Maher’s show this Friday, etc. and there should be ways to exploit any major media event critiquing capitalism like this movie is supposed to do so as to raise the RBE alternative. If you can make it to Wednesday’s showing, please respond here or respond to blog post in upper left hand corner of screen.

I’d really like to go… it would be a great opportunity to give out some dvds and to meet you guys. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to go because of work.
I’d love to go, but I have a class tonight (9/23/09). I live in Huntington, where we have the Cinema Arts Centre, the suburban person’s version of the Waverly,so to speak. There are a great number of films of interest there. On other fronts, I can meet up in Manhattan on another day.
I’m in, and flexible on time and location, those options all work for me (I’m on a bike ;^).
How many people can come if we change nite to 9/24 instead of 9/23? Do you love Capitalism? Not me, so let’s see Moore’s Movie “Capitalism – A Love Story” together & see how we can exploit this to a resource based economy RBE advantage. Me, Robert, Spider, – how about Vincent and Moety2? Peter? Anyone else interested? Let’s do it on the night more people can attend. I’m not good at math so people please respond & someone figure this out. Diego – how hard would it be for you to send one more email en masse to the entire registered group that if Wednesday night’s opening day showing of Moore’s Capitalism movie is not convenient for them and Thursday night is better, could they please come to the webpage and indicate such at this link? I’m hoping as administrator it’s a one-step process for you. Thanks very much.
Angie
The system is working now so it’s easy just send me the message on a private message.
I would like to go but I am unavailable both days because of work. If the day is changed to Saturday, count me in. Thanks.
ABOUT PLAN TO SEE CAPITALISM MOVIE THIS WEEK TOGETHER as suggested originally on NYC group forum post last week: After work today I will go and case the joint (the Midtown theatre) looking to find some place reasonable in this high priced neighborhood where we can sit and talk afterwards and I’ll report back. I plan on buying a ticket for tomorrow’s 6:40 p.m. show because I want to see it in time to possibly post responses to any relevant internet discussions I come across about it (a little easy armchair internet activism, where time is often of the essence). And anyone who can also make it to that showing tomorrow, I’ll post here later a cross-street & time to meet beforehand & you should be able to recognize me from avatar photo and/or email me at Angie@WhatNewsShouldBe.org as to how I can recognize you or to exchange cell numbers. There are those for whom tomorrow and/or Thursday was not good & one person suggested a Saturday, and another even more time. I’ve been looking forward to meeting other Zeitgeisters so I’d be willing to see it again Thursday even, and/or meet after whenever the rest of you decide to see it, Midtown/Downtown – or in other boroughs where it will be shown starting Oct 2nd (except for the godforsaken borough of Queens, and no weekends for me), just post details somewhere visible of your plans to meetup on another day, in addition to tomorrow.
i don’t know about weekdays for me..but i can attend on Saturday..any openings for Saturday?..please let me know i would like to meet some of you guys! and i really don’t know about this movie but am down to see it and find out
I could go tomorrow…but I really want to go on a night that the majority of zeitgeisters will be there…of course for the most diverse discussion at said coffee shop after the movie. I’m torn!!! Tomorrow? Thurs? Sat? Which one are most going to?
DETAILS FOR TOMORROW-WED. NITE TO MEET, WATCH CAPITALISM MOVE TOGETHER, & TALK AFTERWARD
1) PURCHASE YOUR TICKET EARLY FOR THE 6:40 P.M. SHOW AT BOOTH OUTSIDE OF THEATRE WHICH IS ON BROADWAY BETWEEN 62ND & 63RD STREETS IN MANHATTAN. I bought mine already and was advised it would guarantee me a seat in the theatre for that particular showing but that I should get there 1/2 hour in advance or I would most likely be sitting in the first row. They do not line people up outside the theatre. Instead, they will line people up inside the theatre, after taking an escalator down a level – but because of possible commotion that might be outside theatre since it’s the first day movie is out, we should meet one block away before we go into building together. When I bought ticket earlier today, it was only the 10th ticket sold for that 6:40 p.m. showing so far, but who knows about tomorrow given that it may be the only theatre in NY showing it so far. Their telephone number is 212-757-2280 and they do sell tickets over phone for extra charge – above the $12 ticket fee. (They claim their theatre is the only one in Manhattan showing film tomorrow even though I’ve seen a newspaper ad that movie is also playing downtown, at the Angelika).
2) ***THEN AT 6:00 P.M. SHARP (WITH TICKET IN HAND) MEET YOUR FELLOW ZEITGEISTERS A BLOCK AWAY FROM THE THEATRE ON THE CORNER OF 62nd & BROADWAY, RIGHT IN FRONT OF “BEST BUY” STORE UNDER STREET LIGHT (and across the street from TD Bank). AND WE’LL WALK TO THEATRE AT 6:10 P.M. TOGETHER.
3) I LOOKED & ASKED AROUND FOR SOMEPLACE REASONABLE & CONVENIENT PLACE FOR US TO TALK AFTERWARD IN THIS REALLY UPSCALE-ONLY AREA and it’s slim pickings. Of course, everywhere you look there are Starbucks (on 58th, 60th, 63rd, etc.) but I found I think our best bet at a place called The Moon Rock Cafe on 57th Street near 8th Avenue. (212) 397-3131. They told me their business is very slow around 9:00 p.m. and they wouldn’t mind in the slightest if people came in and just ordered coffee and sat around talking, and they have tables which fit 8 people each in the back. Of course if enough people go and we do end up at this place, any Zeitgeisters are willing to join us, even if you couldn’t attend the 6:40 showing of movie. (Their menu is breakfast all day, salads, sandwiches, etc.) Last choice I could find was a McDonald’s on 56th & 8th with seating.)
Be there (at 6:00 p.m. at corner of 62nd & Broadway in front of Best Buy store with ticket in hand) or be square. And if you can’t make it tomorrow-Wednesday, don’t despair, as there seems to be lots of interest also in seeing this movie & getting together on a different day, weeknite or weekend meeting with other Zeitgeisters, just post about it – probably the best place would be to post on the NYC Group’s forum, in the post containing name of movie, Capitalism – a love story.
Look forward to meeting all who can come (and if you want to exchange names or cell numbers or something in advance, email me at Angie@WhatNewsShouldBe.org)
Angie
ill be there tomorrow
wow now i remember about this movie..i wouldn’t mind watching it..am going to try to make it but probably late.
Notes:
(1) CASH ONLY (they take no CC) — $12 pp;
(2) it’s the small theater on Broadway btw. 62/63 — NOT giant Loews (5 blocks north at 67/68 on same side of street)
See y’all tonight…
Angie, Deven, and I met before the show last evening and saw it together. I thought it was really well done, made me conscious of things I had not known about before. We went to the diner afterwards and stayed until 12:30 discussing it, and making plans for promoting the ideas of RBE as an alternative to capitalism. Moore suggests that Democracy should be the replacement for capitalism, by which he meant the fairness expressed by FDR in a special speech he made in 1943 outlining a “second Bill of Rights”, meaning that everyone should be able to work, have housing, food, medical care, education. So, there’s some consonance between that vision and the RBE (if you remove the need to work and the monetary system, and add in automation which of course FDR could not anticipate). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I plan to see it again, with some more Zeitgeisters if possible. Angie and Deven and I are going to work on further clarifying how to leverage this movie’s message to reach potential audience for the RBE concepts.
I really enjoyed the film because it was very factually based, pulling information from real testimonials, trials, news, documents, senators, congressmen…One thing that really struck me was the citigroup investor document that was somehow acquired. If you havent seen the movie and don’t want to ruin anything, dont look @ this until you do, but for those who would like to see in regardless, I found a link:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/6674229/Citigroup-Mar-5-2006-Plutonomy-Report-Part-20
I haven’t been able to actually see it yet, because im firewalled currently – but check it ouand let me know if it works.
Nice Find!
If you are going to see it again in the near future Rob, I would like to join you and anyone else who would like to attend.
yeah me too..i would like to go this Saturday late evening?..anybody want to join me?
@ Nilsa
I might be able to join you. I will be down in the city but I have plans earlier time would be nice because I have some plans for later that night.
Whoever goes, PLEASE indicate how big the crowd was when you were there. I was very surprised that on opening day in Midtown the 6:40 p.m. theatre was NOT filled. Maybe only 75 percent seats were filled. Moore’s doing lots of interviews about the movie all over on TV now, both on regular and cable stations (like on “The View” either today or yesterday) and I really hope this creates great attendance levels. His interview on Good Morning America (uploaded on his website, http://www.michaelmoore.com I think) was FANTASTIC. I’m surprised this movie where Capitalism is really trashed, and described as “evil” even is backed by (Paramount, I think) and promoted by corporate media even when these corporations – like ABC in the Good Morning America interview bear the brunt of Moore’s examples. Since when does the corporate media not act in their own best long term interests like this?? I don’t get it. In some of the interviews, Moore comes off in his critique of capitalism stronger, and sometimes weaker than the movie, but to even be discussing the nature of capitalism and examining it like this all over the corporate media in the U.S. is surprisingly shocking! And provides wonderful opportunities to present RBE as an alternative to capitalism. We need to both get people to see this movie and provide additional info to those that do.

If you’re heading to the theatre, don’t go empty handed! Take some flyers with you to distribute which discuss both Moore’s movie and The Venus Project. A movie which trashes capitalism is a fantastic opportunity to get people to consider a sane alternative to it. If you want to spread knowledge of Fresco’s vision this is a great way to do it. At the link below, you can download 3 different flyers each targeted to 3 different audiences: one is to be given to people when they’re exiting Moore’s movie after they’ve seen it as it discusses what Moore left out of his movie (including technological unemployment); the other two are to entice people to go to see Moore’s movie, one of which is geared to the religious community in particular who might be interested in knowing that Moore’s movie addresses religious views of Capitalism and would be good to distribute at churches, religious schools, and the like. You can download the flyers at this link:

Moore’s movie is a great opportunity to turn people on to Jacque Fresco’s resource based economy/Venus Project because it has people thinking about the nature of the beast and people are already hungering for an alternative that makes sense.
Feedback on the flyers is very welcomed. (Please email me directly at Angie@WhatNewsShouldBe.org rather than through this website.)
best,
Angie
P.S. Anyone knows of any REALLY cheap copy places in NYC? Please email me details! Thanks!
